Transforming Justice Australia Initiatives

Initiative 1- Restorative Justice Training & Workshop 2020 - 2021

Transforming Justice Australia will host a workshop to provide community, practitioners and survivors with an opportunity to learn about each other's work, to engage with restorative justice practice following sexual violence and to consider how research and literature in relation to family violence and sexual assault might be used to develop models of practice.

This workshop will feature key local agencies, advocates and survivors. It will be co-facilitated by leading restorative justice practitioners from New Zealand affiliated with Project Restore. Postponed due to COVID a new date will be released soon.

We are actively seeking financial support to finalise the budget and expenditure for this initiative.

This will be an important next step for Transforming Justice Australia to advance conversation and public engagement in the area of restorative justice and will bring together survivors, community members, and agencies to:

  • Listen to survivors and provide safe spaces for people to speak about the impact of the trauma they have experienced

  • Learn about restorative justice and practice in this area from an organisation as a global leader in this work (Project Restore, New Zealand);

  • Share international research and best practice in the field of victim-oriented restorative justice

  • Improve community awareness of restorative justice practices and the opportunity to learn from international experts in the field of restorative justice and family violence

Outcomes of the workshop include to:

  • Invite attendees to use their experience and professionalism to think about how restorative justice might be incorporated into their own practices;

  • Invite individuals and organisations to engage with Transforming Justice Australia and to explore application of RJ in their own community or organisation.

  • Explore future co-design opportunities for implementation of restorative justice or training opportunities for individual workplaces or communities

  • Invite ongoing collaboration, co-design and networking opportunities through Transforming Justice Australia affiliation

Initiative 2 - Restorative justice initiative for young people in Children’s Court, sexual assault

We are working with a community to develop and implement a restorative justice project for young people in the criminal division of the Children’s Court.

We have commenced consultation and project design for this model.

More information about this work will be released in course.

This work in unfunded and we are actively seeking funding to support this initiative.

Initiative 3 - Advocacy for restorative justice for adult survivors of sexual assault

For the past two years we have been speaking publicly to raise awareness about the evidence base for restorative justice for sexual violence matters. We have been consulting with the community, justice, advocacy, university and social welfare sector to seek their contributions to this dialogue,

If your organisation would like to know more about this work, or support the expansion of restorative justice and restorative practices, please get in touch.

We are working towards the development of a demonstration project for adults in sexual violence and are inviting other organisations interested in advancing this work with our service to get in touch.

This work is un-funded and we are actively seeking funding for this initiative.

Initiative 4 - Advocacy for Circles of Support and Accountability

We support community-based and community-led programs that work to achieve community safety because we know this can be achieved through peer to peer mentoring, clinical treatment and evidence-based therapy. We believe that people responsible for sexual harm are entitled to have access to this support. People responsible for sexual harm live and work in our communities, and so must have access to this support where and when they need it.

We support the funding of Circles of Support and Accountability and the work of Community Restorative Centre.
